Duncansby Stacks & Dunnet Head
Well, as Dinah Washington would say, ‘what a difference a day makes’ - woke up to it blowing a hooley, torrential rain and hail!! So did the ‘have to take the dogs out for their morning toilet routine’ and went back to bed with a cuppa ☕️. No rush to get out today so just took it slow and enjoyed a much needed lie in.
Thankfully by lunchtime it had cleared up so we got ready to go out for the afternoon.
Tubbs was really keen to see the Duncansby Stacks just off shore of Duncansby Head on the most north-eastern point of mainland Britain. These towering sea stacks certainly didn’t disappoint. We decided to brave taking the pups with us which we knew would be challenging as we had to walk through open undulating farmland full of, you guessed it, sheep poop, which Master Wicket loves!. It was a very invigorating walk as the wind was quite strong and the ground springy under foot (full of water) but enjoyable at the same time. We walked for about 40 minutes to get a good vantage point and so worth it with the sea battering against the cliff edge you felt the fine sea spray. Amazing photo opportunity too and stunning rock formations all round. On getting back to the van thankfully we have these towel bags for the pups so once in them they can stay in them until we get back to the camp site later (fingers crossed they’d be dry by the time we got back). All was good and they were dry and clean(ish) so we had a nice chilled evening in the van, cooked dinner and played cards - guess who won? 😉
Next day we woke up to blue skies and sunshine! Weather so changeable here but you have just got to go with it. Again the site we are on is right on a beach (you can see a theme here!?) so we took the pups for a play and also to check out the surf. What a beautiful beach - gorgeous golden sands stretching over 2 miles with rolling sand dunes. Although the sun was out the water temperature is a bit on the cool side so Tubbs decided not to surf - especially as he only has his 4:3 wetsuit with him 🥶
Late morning we went to check out the nearby town of Thurso and saw a couple of cool surf breaks, but sadly as it was Sunday we caught the town on a bad day and nothing was really open. Also because of Covid no restaurants were open either, so we decided to go check out Dunnet Head. We parked up and had a bite of lunch - the advantages of having your own kitchen with you at all times 😋
Dunnet Head is a pretty cool spot as it is the furthest point north of Scotland with impressive views. The drive to get to it is challenging being only a single car width with a number of ‘passing places’ but coming from a small island with narrow lanes, this was not a problem! We explored a bit by the lighthouse but could see in the distance large black storm clouds looming and the temperature was dropping, so we decided to call it a day and head back to the camp site to chill out and catch up on our blog.
Next stop Durness!
Peace out ✌️
Lots of love T&TA 😘
